Over 2 years ago, on the friendly confines of Desperado's houseboat someone
brought up the idea of taking a motorcycle trip to Alaska. We thought about
it, researched it, added up the mileage, and put it into a time frame. We
decided we could do it. We all got our vacations at the preferred time. We
made the ferry reservations and booked most of the hotel rooms. We wanted
to ride our Harley's up the famous Alaskan Highway, go to Anchorage, and
then back down to Skagway and catch the ferry. We had 28 days so we
decided to ride hard till we got to the Alaskan Highway then take our time
and look things over.
The Characters
Buck riding his 89 FLHS, Desperado riding his 98 Ultra Classic, and me the
Road Captain riding my 98 Road King Classic. We all had been doing lots of
riding trying to get in shape for a trip of this magnitude. We knew that to
make 8000 miles in 28 days we would have to ride rain or shine, cold or hot,
good roads or bad. We all had good rain suits, warm clothing, gortex boots,
everything we would need to stay warm and dry. We had our bikes in top
shape, new tires and fresh oil. We knew there would be places on the
Alaskan Highway that would be very remote so we took our tents, sleeping
bags, and a mat to sleep on. Buck even took a spare tire with him. With all
the gear loaded down the day finally rolls around to pull out.
